The Illustrated 3D Blu-ray Disc Player List
This page lists Blu-ray disc players capable of playing back the new Blu-ray 3D format discs and connecting to the Blu-ray 3D compatible HDTVs. This list is a supplement to The Illustrated 3D Movie List.
The first 3D Blu-ray disc players were released in early 2010. A wide range of Blu-ray disc players from many manufacturers are now available. Most 3D Blu-ray disc players output 3D in the HDMI 1.4 standard for connecting to HDMI 1.4 compatible 3D HDTVs (see list). Some 3D Blu-ray disc players will also output 3D in the checkerboard which is very useful to directly drive the wide range of Samsung and Mitsubishi 3D DLP HDTVs that have been available since 2007. (Do you have a Samsung or Mitsubishi 3D DLP HDTV and not know that it is 3D compatible? Check the list.)
An expanding range of Blu-ray 3D discs is now becoming available - check the Illustrated Blu-ray 3D disc list to see which discs are available now and coming soon.
Please note that I don't sell these 3D Blu-ray disc players. The buy links will take you to various commercial providers, including Amazon. Additionally, 3DMovieList is unable to guarantee the 3D compatibility of all products listed here - especially those that haven't been tested. Please do your homework. Manufacturers wishing to have their products verified for 3D compatibility should contact 3DMovieList.
Don't forget to check the Blu-ray 3D discs list and 3D HDTVs list. We are in the midst of a huge roll-out of 3D products - Stay Tuned!

FAQs
What is the Blu-ray 3D disc format? The Blu-ray 3D disc format is defined by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and has not been released publicly. In general terms it uses MPEG4 with MVC (multi-view coding) to store the extra stereoscopic second view information. The left perspective view is encoded in the standard video stream, and the second perspective view is encoded as a difference information signal (the difference between the left and right perspective views) stored as an MVC stream. On playback, the player converts from 2D+MVC+difference and converts this to left and right perspective views and finally outputs a 3D signal via the HDMI connector (usually HDMI 1.4 frame-packed).
What video formats does the Blu-ray 3D disc format support? Full-HD (1080P) 3D at 24P, 720P 3D at 30P and 25P. (I have not been able to ascertain whether 1080i 3D content is supported - do you know?). You will notice that video (30fps and 25fps) content cannot be encoded in 3D at Full-Hd resolution.
Must I view Blu-ray 3D discs in a 3D Blu-ray disc player? Yes, if you want to see it in 3D. Some Blu-ray 3D discs can be played on a regular Blu-ray disc player, but they will only be seen in 2D. Please note that Blu-ray 3D discs can also be played in 3D using a PC with a Blu-ray drive, Blu-ray 3D compatible playback software, and a suitable 3D HDTV or 3D monitor.
Can I watch field-sequential 3D DVDs or Sensio 3D DVDs in 3D on a HDMI 1.4 compatible 3D HDTV using a 3D Blu-ray disc player? No*. Current 3D Blu-ray disc players do not recognize the field-sequential 3D or Sensio 3D formats and are incapable of outputing them in the HDMI 1.4 3D format. At the present time the easiest way to do this is using a PC and 3D compatible software (e.g. Stereoscopic Player, DepthQ player, or DDD Tridef Media Player).
*There is one caviet here... The Sensio 3D DVD format is a side-by-side quincunx formatted 3D signal. Some 3D TVs will accept side-by-side 3D format so theoretically they will support the side-by-side formatted Sensio discs, but note that unless they _also_ implement quincunx decoding, the playback will not achieve the full 3D resolution encoded on the Sensio 3D DVD.
