The Illustrated 3D Camera ListThis page lists commercially available 3D digital still and 3D digital video cameras - including both (a) dedicated, integrated stereoscopic 3D digital still cameras, and (b) select Canon cameras that are capable of being used as stereoscopic 3D pairs using the SDM (StereoData Maker) software. (a) The Fujifilm Finepix W1 was the very first integrated consumer 3D digital still camera. It will probably be the first of many. (b) StereoData Maker allows select Canon cameras (listed below) can be paired and fired simultaneously to take high-quality stereoscopic images. The cameras are synchronised by using an external trigger which plugs into the USB port of both cameras. Mounting bars and external triggers are available from a range of sources. To start shooting your own stereoscopic 3D pictures, all you need is: (a) a pair of suitable cameras (select from the list below), (b) a suitable mounting bar (sometimes called a Z-bar), (c) a USB trigger/remote (see below), and (d) the StereoData Maker (SDM) software. Whether the user chooses an integrated 3d camera such as the Fuji W1, or an SDM 3D camera pair will depend whether the user wishes (a) the convenience and pocketability of an integrated 3D camera or (b) the adjustable camera separation and potentialy higher image quality of an SDM 3D camera pair. Please note that I don't sell these cameras. The buy links will take you to various commercial providers, including Amazon. This list is a supplement to The Illustrated 3D Movie List. Andrew Woods

FAQ (for SDM camera pairs):
PLEASE NOTE: Ensure that you check the SDM website for camera and firmware version compatibility before buying SDM compatible cameras.
The "StereoData Maker" software is available here: http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/index.htm
USB triggers/remotes are available from digi-dat or you can make one yourself using instructions such as this: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,3631.msg33855.html#msg33855. Another nice solution for a USB trigger is the Ricoh CA-1 providing that a compatible USB splitter is used to provide two USB outputs, or the CA-1 is modified to add a second USB connector.
Once you have taken a stereo-pair with your new stereo-camera, what next? Use the free "StereoPhoto Maker" software to align and mount your images. The same software can also be used to display your stereoscopic 3D images on (almost) any of the commercially available stereoscopic 3D displays or projectors.
